After Jesus' death on the cross for our sin and His resurrection to life on the third day, He spent a few weeks more on earth before ascending to heaven. With His earthly ministry over, he left His church to continue this mission until He returns.
We continue Jesus' mission today by witnessing to what He achieved on the cross for us. God has empowered His people for this mission by giving all Christians His Holy Spirit and His very own word, written for us in the Bible. This great news of what God has done to restore His relationship with humanity through Jesus is what Christians call the gospel or good news of Jesus.
Around the globe Christians have found different ways to express what a church community is. A true church is one that is focussed and built on the gospel of Jesus. What we think of as churches are merely local expressions of the one true community Jesus is building. He is only building one church.
Christians make this gospel heard as we share it: in conversation, in reading the Bible with others and as we invite people to join us as we gather on a Sunday. As Christians live in community together, sharing the gospel, growing in our love for Jesus, each other and our community we seek to make the gospel visible so that many more may give their lives to Jesus and receive eternal life.
